A shooting at one of Seattle’s most popular summer events left three people dead and four others hospitalized Sunday evening, turning a packed food festival into a crime scene just steps from the Space Needle.
Gunfire broke out around 6 p.m. on the northwest side of The Armory at Seattle Center, where thousands of people had gathered for the final hours of the Bite of Seattle, an annual three-day festival featuring hundreds of food and retail vendors. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third died later at a hospital. Four others, including a 2-year-old boy, were transported to Harborview Medical Center and are listed in stable condition.
Two suspects, one still at large
Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said investigators believe two people were shooting at each other when bystanders were struck. One suspect, described only as a “young person,” was taken into custody shortly after the shooting. A second suspect fled the scene and remains at large. As of Sunday night, police said they did not have a description of the outstanding suspect.
Officers recovered two firearms at the scene. Davis told reporters that authorities are still piecing together exactly what happened and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson had earlier confirmed that two people were believed to be involved before police formally briefed the media.
A festival turned crime scene
Seattle Center was shut down as officers worked the scene. The Bite of Seattle draws massive crowds each summer and is one of the city’s signature warm-weather events. Sunday evening would have been among its busiest periods, with attendees wrapping up the final day.
Among the wounded, victims suffered injuries to the arm and abdomen, according to hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg. Seattle Fire Department spokesperson Grace Nuñez confirmed the ages of those injured, noting the 2-year-old was the youngest victim.
What comes next
Police have not released the identities of the victims or the arrested suspect. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the second suspect to come forward.
The shooting adds to a painful stretch for Seattle, where gun violence at public gatherings has sharpened debates over safety and event security. City officials have not yet addressed whether the incident will affect future permitting or security protocols for large-scale events at Seattle Center.
